Truffle Production

There are many considerations when growing truffles: 

  1. truffle type (species)
  2. host tree species
  3. soil type of location
  4. pH of soil at chosen location
  5. fertility program for trees which allow optimum truffle production
  6. harvest method (dogs versus hogs)
  7. and marketing

Most truffle growers take great consideration in selecting which species of truffle, adjusting the pH, tree species, etc..., but will spend no time considering the soil fertility which nourishes the host tree in turn producing the truffles.  The bottom line on this is the healthier the tree is and the better fertility the tree is exposed to during the growing season the better the truffle production will be because the host tree has the maximum amount of available nutrients to share with the fungi which are living on it.

  • Soil testing is a must before establishing orchards to have the best opportunity to maximize impact on basic phosphorus levels as well as adjust the pH.
  • Soil testing annually to determine if pH needs to be adjusted as well as determining tree fertility needs are also necessary for optimum production.
  • Using the right amount of lime, method of incorporation, having knowledge of lime characteristics such as CCA and neutralization values make a huge impact on how effective pH can be maintained around the target pH level of 8.1 and subsequent production.
  • If considering irrigation water quality tests are a must because high loads of minerals in water may, but not always increase pH and need to be considered in management programs.
  • Due to impact of pH and variability of soil in truffle production areas it is necessary to grid sample to maximize management impact relative to pH.

 

Programs are available for interpreting soil tests, providing recommendations on fertility and lime use, and technical support for product use.  Use of these programs has provided for increase mainly in size of truffle and to a lesser extent in number of truffles per tree.  This program has led new growers which execute management decisions properly to 3rd year production of 4 to 6 ounces per truffle on moderate size transplanted chestnut trees.
